Learn moreMost standard washing machines are designed to fit beneath an 85cm-high worktop in a 60cm-wide space, but their exact dimensions—particularly the depth—can vary between models.
Most modern washing machines only require a cold-water connection. The appliance takes in cold water and heats it internally to the temperature required by the selected programme. A separate hot-water feed is therefore not normally needed. Some specialist or older machines may be different, so always check the individual product specification and installation instructions. You will also need a suitable waste-water connection and an appropriate electrical socket near the installation position.
Washing machine capacity is measured by the maximum weight of dry laundry the machine can wash on the appropriate programme. An 8kg or 9kg machine is a good starting point for many households, while larger families or anyone regularly washing bulky loads may benefit from 10kg or more. Bigger isn't always better, though. If you normally wash smaller loads, a very large drum may offer little practical advantage, so consider how much laundry you actually wash rather than simply choosing the largest capacity available.
It is possible to install a washing machine yourself if the correct plumbing and electrical connections are already in place and you're confident doing it. The transit bolts must be removed, the water inlet and waste hoses connected correctly, and the machine needs to be level and stable. Incorrect installation can cause leaks, excessive vibration or damage to the appliance. If you're replacing an existing machine and would rather not deal with the installation, a professional installation service is the easier option.
It depends on the programme. Quick programmes may take less than an hour, while an Eco 40-60 programme can take several hours. A long cycle doesn't necessarily mean the machine is using more energy. Modern Eco programmes can reduce energy consumption by washing for longer while using less energy to heat the water. Programme times can also change depending on the size of the load and the options selected, so don't be surprised if the displayed time adjusts after the wash has started.
